The Motorola VE66 is an effective and stylish slider phone handset

The Motorola VE66 is a slider phone with a difference, offering as it does a wide array of useful functionality whilst also offering a Linux-based operating system. The handset measures 103 mm x 49 mm wide and is 15 mm thick, whilst weighing 121 g in weight.

The Motorola VE66 comes with a 2.2 inch display screen which is TFT in nature and displays 256,000 colours within its 240 x 320 pixel screen size. Imagery is effectively displayed with an excellent depth of colour variation. A navigation scroll wheel is provided which provides effective navigation around the enclosed functionality and screen, whilst a variety of screensavers and wallpapers are also included as part of the package to individualise the handset. The handset also includes a variety of widgets as standard.

The phone comes with ring and vibration alert options, with the added bonus of being able to download additional polyphonic and MP3 ringtones or as an alternative, utilising existing downloaded MP3 files as ringtones. The inclusion of a speakerphone is a useful addition whilst the phone book retains 1000 contacts and offers photo call functionality. The call records facility offers the ability to review the last 20 dialled, received and missed calls which can be accessed as and when required.

The handset comes with 110 MB of internal memory with the option to increase this by utilising the integrated microSD card slot. Class 12 versions of GPRS and EDGE combine well with Wi Fi and Bluetooth as well as microUSB.

The handset includes a 5.0 megapixel camera which operates at 2560 x 1920 pixels and includes auto focus and an LED flash as its primary means of ensuring quality of image. The handset also includes a stereo FM radio with RDS capabilities as well as several games in addition to a useful MP4/MP3 media player. The handset also includes several features such as a push to talk facility, organiser and voice memo capabilities.

The Moto VE66 utilises the Linux / Java-based MOTOMAGX operating system in conjunction with the renowned 32-bit Freescale MXC275-30 500 MHz processor. These two elements provide a suitably efficient platform by which the enclosed functionality can flourish. The unit itself is a competent and viable option for those considering a handset that encompasses numerous useful features and functions within a stylish casing.
